Averden Advisory · Editorial perspective
When cash is tight, the instinct is to sell more. But growth consumes cash before it generates it, and there is often cash locked inside the existing business.
Start with debtors: invoice promptly, agree clear terms, chase systematically and consider whether early-payment terms are worth offering. Then stock: slow-moving lines are cash sitting on a shelf. Then suppliers: honest conversations about realistic terms are usually more productive than silent late payment.
Review every recurring cost and ask whether it still earns its place. Pause discretionary spend until the position is stable.
For example, a business with £60,000 of debtors collected ten days faster releases roughly £16,000 of cash permanently, without selling anything new. This article is general information, not personalised advice.
